Emma Thompson’s Mom Found Guilty In Her Cause of Death (Texas)
HOUSTON (AP) — A Harris County jury has found a suburban Houston mother guilty of failing to prevent the death of her 4-year-old daughter.
Jurors deliberated for four hours Monday before finding 34-year-old Abigail Young guilty of recklessly causing injury to a child by omission. Young faces up to 20 years in prison and will be sentenced at a separate hearing.
Emma Thompson died June 27, 2009, after suffering a severed pancreas and fractured skull. She also had tested positive for genital herpes.
Defense attorneys had argued Young didn’t know about the abuse and took her daughter to a doctor when she noticed the bruising and herpes.
Young’s boyfriend at the time, 28-year-old Lucas Coe, is set for trial in September on aggravated sexual assault charges. He’s accused of raping the child. Source: Kens5.com News on July 12, 2010 at 6:06 PM
The victim impact statements from the dad and the paternal grandma were heartbreaking, and also shed some powerful insights on the character of Abigail. Ben Thompson, Emma’s daddy, said he heard that Abby would just sit on the couch and smile and wave at Luke Coe as he headed up the stairs to rape Emma! And the paternal grandmother said that we don’t know the “true” Abigail, the one who was a punk with various piercings and weird dyed hair…although I will be the first to say that does not mean people who have piercings and dyed hair are bad people at all. Some of my students look like that and they are the greatest human beings ever! But the point she was making was that Abby was presenting herself to the jury as this dowdy “mother of the year”- looking person. Also, the grandma said that Abby once left the pool ladder in her back yard up on purpose, and when grandma pointed this out, as a safety concern for kids in the neighborhood, Abby defiantly stomped out and opened the back gate, giving even MORE access for an innocent toddler to wander in and drown!
Abby’s a hard-a**, not the person she portrayed to the jury. She will fit right in with the prison crowd…that is, if they don’t get to her first!
